William Gottlieb; a Jazz Photographer

William Paul Gottlieb (1917 - 2006) was another one of those cats, but not with a horn or a hand on keyboard. He was a photographer and his subjects were jazz musicians in their prime time. In the 1930s and 1940s he was out on Basin’ Street and other joints trying to capture the mood of ‘Golden Age’ of jazz. He was a devil when he took some photos from a cat performing in a club or sitting in front of a mirror in his/her backstage room. “We are so lucky that there was a Bill Gottlieb there at that time to document. You’ve got to remember that there were no headlines in the paper in those days saying this is the ‘golden era of jazz’ and it’s going to be gone someday.” says Loren Schoenberg about Gottelib's great contribution to the world of jazz.

There are 60 incredible pieces of his work printed in a book called Golden Age of Jazz. And in this collection 4 photos later became the basis for the U. S. stamps of Lady Day, Jimmy Rushing, Mildred Bailey and Bird.

Just dig how Miles is looking at Howard McGhee. I know today the name doesn’t ring for most of the people, but back then McGhee was a giants and years ahead of young Miles.

One of my all time favorites. Bird with his long-time associate, Tommy Potter. His eyes are like fire.

Any attempt to compile a discography of albums whose liner notes are written by Nat Hentoff will be needing a team of ten devoted researchers who could go through thousands of not only jazz albums for major labels, but also material recorded for long defunct obscure ones and beyond jazz, for pop, easy listening, folk and country music. Any result, either as a comprehensive online database or an anthology of such writings in print would prove to be one of the most invaluable examples of music criticism and journalism in 20th century.


Here, with the permission of Mr. Hentoff himself, I started taking note of every jazz albums that I knew, and whenever possible, transcribing and adding the original notes to this blog.

هِـربی نیکـولز، قصيده سراي پيانو

هربی نیکـولز یکی از پیانیست های مورد علاقۀ من است. میان این همه غول و این همه نام های بزرگ، بند کردن به نیکولز ممکن است کمی عجیب به نظر برسد؛ درست مثل این که کسی بگوید کارگردان مورد علاقه اش اچ. سی. پاتر است. اما اجازه بدهید بگویم اگر کسی پیدا شد و ادعا کرد که اچ سی پاتر کارگردانی است که می پسندد، بنده دست او را به گرمی خواهم فشرد و بی مهابا با دعوتش به نوشیدن قهوه در اولین قهوه خانۀ سر راه تلاش خواهم کرد سر از راز او در بیاورم. در دنیای امروز و در مراودات فرهنگی شاید این گرایش های مستقل بسی بیشتر از انتخاب های معلوم و بدیهی بر آدم تأثیر بگذارند.

پس لازم نیست از این که آقای هربی نیکولز در حد تلانیوس مانک یا باد پاول نیست خجالت بکشیم و یا از این که صدای پیانوی او در ثانیۀ اول امضای مسلمش را ندارد خرده ای بر این پیانیست بزرگ و به نظرم "بی نقص" بگیریم.

حالا که کارمان را با مثالی سینمایی آغاز کردیم ( و من خواهش می کنم اچ سی عزیز را کاملاً جدی گرفته، و آن را فقط یک مثال تلقی نکنید!)، برای سر در آوردن از کار هربی نیکولز آن را با یک مثال سینمایی دیگر ادامه می دهیم.

نیکولز مثل مروین له روی (کارگردان مورد علاقۀ ساموئل فولر!) است. له روی همه نوع فیلمی ساخته و در هر نوع بعضی از بهترین ها را. گنگستری باشکوهی چون سزار کوچک، سند اجتماعی تکان دهنده ای از دوران بحران اقتصادی در من یک فراری از دستۀ زنجیری هایم ، جنجال و رسوایی و ستیز با سانسور سه تا با یک کبریت، یکی از بهترین ملودرام های تاریخ در Random Harvest، موزیکال با جیپسی، نوار رنگی با داستان اف بی آی، ترسناک با Bad Seed، فیلم های تاریخی بر مبنای کتب مقدس در کجا می روی؟ و رومانس های پرطرفداری مثل پل واترلو (که بعد برباد رفته پر بیننده ترین فیلم ویوین لی محسوب می شود). او در عین حال به طرز عجیبی پر کار بود و به تنهایی نُه فیلم در 1930 و شش فیلم در 1932 ساخته است!

با تمام این حرف ها او در فهرست برترین های هیچ روشنفکری جا ندارد و یا به عنوان یک مؤلف شناخته نمی شود. موقعیت نیکولز نیز چنین است. اما هم پیانیست مورد بحث ما و هم له روی می توانند به خاطر تداوم و انسجام حرفه ای کارنامه ای بلند و برای عشقی که به هنرشان در آثار آن ها دیده می شود، جایی در حد غول ها و نوابغ صاحب نام پیدا کنند.

نقطۀ اشتراک دیگر این آقایان بزرگوار عدم محدودیتی است که در برخورد آن ها با موسیقی یا سینما دیده می شود، نوعی آزادگی در سبک که عده ای می توانند – و این کار را می کنند – که آن را به عدم وحدت سبک یا "مشخصات بارز" در آثارشان تعبیر کنند.

دوستان من؛ در دنیایی که چنین اغتشاش مهیبی از همه سو در جریان است دیگر چه کسی برای "مشخصات بارز" یا "وحدت سبک" - که تنها وسیله ای برای سنجش هنری توسط آدم های کند ذهن است - تره خُـرد می کند.

بازگردیم به هربی نیکولز، پیانیست نيويوركي که در 1919 متولد شده و در 1963 درگذشته ، حياتي كه در تقابل با هنر او به طرزي بي شرمانه كوتاه بوده است.

گوش سپردن به او درست مثل این است که در یک لحظه هم رد گارلند بشنوید، هم لحظاتی از مانک، هم passage هایی از باد پاول، هم رمانتی سیزم شکنندۀ بیل اونز و هم سویینگ جانانۀ اسکار پترسون. نیکولز مانند یک سالاد مخلوط بزرگ و بسیار تازه است که هیچ کس نمی پرسد چرا این همه طعم های گوناگون و مواد اولیۀ گوناگون در یک ظرف جمع شده اند. در نهایت همۀ آن ها طعم واحدی خواهند داد و در این حال شنونده به دامنۀ نفوذ موسیقیایی هربی نیکولز پا گذاشته است؛ دامنه ای که کوچک ترین نسبتی با محدودیت ندارد.

اما حتي براي كساني كه با نيكولز، به عنوان يك پيانيست، آشنايي چنداني ندارند، نام او به عنوان يكي از فرهيخته ترين آهنگسازان جاز شايد طنيني روشن داشته باشد. اولين بار مري لو ويليامز بود كه در دهۀ 1950 يكي از تصنيفات نيكولز را ضبط كرد. پس از آن نام نيكولز به عنوان مصنفي صاحب سبك سال ها به فراموشي سرده شد تا همين يكي دو دهه اخير كه مي توان رنسانسي را در بازگشت به آثار او ديد.

آثار ضبط شدۀ نيكولز مانند زندگي اش بي رحمانه اندكند، اما چه عیش ها که از شنیدن آن ها عاید من نشده است. بهتر است بگوييم كل زندگي او عبارت است از يك نشست ضبط نصفه و نيمه در 1952، چند آلبوم در 1955 براي بلو نُت (Blue Note) و يك آلبوم (آخرين كارش) براي شرکت کوچک بیت اللحم (Bethlehem). به جز نشست 1952 كه كوارتت است، بقيۀ آثار نيكولز در قالب تریو Trio ضبط شده اند. مي توان همۀ اين آثار را در یک مجموعه کامل (به قول امروزی ها Box Set)، شنيد كه عنوانش هست: Complete Studio Master Takes

اما راه ديگر اين است كه آن ها را در قالب يك آلبوم (از نشست 1957) و يك مجمعه كامل از ضبط هاي بلونت شنيد.

مجموعۀ کامل آثار ضبط شدۀ او در شرکت صفحه پرکنی بلو نُت (Blue Note) که در سه CD منتشر شده گنجینۀ با ارزشی است که پیشتر در قالب چند صفحه در سال های 1955 و 1956 منتشر شده اند و حالا همه با هم، به اضافۀ آثار قبلاً منتشر نشده و برداشت های دیگر آهنگ ها ( که در زبان موسیقی به آن ها alternative take می گویند) در یک مجموعه ظاهر شده اند. دو درامر بزرگ این نشست ها مکس روچ و آرت بلیکی اند و دو نوازندۀ بیس تدی کاتیک و ال مک کیبُـن هستند.

آلبوم Love, Gloom, Cash, Love نيز كاري است كه نیکولز در 1957 برای Bethlehem پر کرده است. در آن ده قطعه وجود دارد. زمان آن ها کوتاه تر از آن است که راه را برای بداهه نوازی های آنچنانی بگشایند، در نتیجه این آلبوم، و دیگر آثار نیکولز، ممکن است از نظر تکنیکی و در قیاس با اعجوبه هایی مانند اسکار پترسن پدیدۀ خارق العاده ای قلمداد نشوند. اما سویینگ، زمان بندی بی نظیرش و نور و روشنی که در اجراهای بی نهایت دقیق و پاکیزه اش از تصنیفات خودش وجود دارد باعث می شود تا با یک بار شنیدن آن هرگز احساس سرمستی که از مواجهه با این خلوص موسیقیایی به شما دست داده از جانتان بیرون نرود.

درامر این آلبوم دنی ریچموند است که در سال های 1970 درامر چارلز مینگوس شد و نوازندۀ بیس [باس] این آلبوم جورج دوویویر (که اسمش، درست مثل ژرژ دوویویه، کارگردان سرشناس فرانسوی، نوشته می شود) است که می تواند باعث و بانی اصلی آن روح باد پاولی آلبوم باشد (او در بهضی از بهترین اجراهای باد حضور داشته).

پیانیست هایی مانند نیکولز در متن موسیقی پویا و هزار چهره ای مانند جاز (یا بهتر است تأکید کنیم؛ جَـز)، بخشی را تشکیل می دهند که در آن موسیقی ساوندتراکی بر کل هستی است. همراهی روان و مکملی بی نظیر برای زندگی روزمره ما با تمام خوشی ها و ناخوشی هایش که هر دو تحت لوای "حرکت" – که در ترجمان موسیقیایی اش می شود، سویینگ – به تعامل با هم ادامه می دهند. هربی نیکولز، رد گارلند، بیل اونز و بیلی تیلور می توانند از لحظۀ صبح گاهی گشودن چشم به یک "روز دیگر"، تا لحظۀ غلبه نیروهای سنگین طبیعت بر پلک هایتان همراه شما باشند و زندگی تان را در لحظه برایتان "ترجمه" کنند؛ به خصوص اگر سر درآوردن از معنای زندگی دیگر برایتان دشوار شده و به مترجمی امین نیاز دارید. در این حال هربی نیکولز در انتظار شماست.

Discography of Mosaic Jazz Box Sets

This is a complete discography of Mosaic box sets. A label that has established itsel as the best "complete reissue" expert in the world of jazz today. Mosaic Records' first release came out in July of 1983. They buy copyright of their materials from different, well-known and obscure, labels for a limited period of time or limited copies so most of their great sets are out of print.

"I want to do definitive, complete box sets that will bring out unissued material, correct mistakes on past reissues and draw a whole body of work together with a serious, deluxe, booklet." says Michael Cuscuna, co-founder of the Mosaic Records about his ambitious project.

I've taken the basic information from their website and assembled them into a discography of all boxed sets, issued by Mosaic from 1980 to this day. As you can see below, some items are released only on LP, some other only on CD and a few of them on both format. The Number of CDs or LPs is indicated too.
These jazz records are more than simple albums, they are great documentations of a pure art form, performed by the masters and packed and released by great enthusiasts of this thing called jazz.
