B.B. King (1925-2015)

"B. B. King, whose world-weary voice and wailing guitar lifted him from the cotton fields of Mississippi to a global stage and the apex of American blues, died Thursday in Las Vegas," wrote The New York Time, "He was 89."

The notes below, which seem like an appropriate way to remember the blues man, are written by Stanley Dance in 1967:

"The King of the Blues! That's what they call Riley B. King, otherwise known as the Boy from Beale Street, the Beale Street Blues Boy, Blues Boy King and B.B. King, a man "born on a plantation right out from Indianola, not too far from Itta Bena, in Mississippi."

Those who call him the King of the Blues are not really much interested in a pretty play on words. They know their man, and they believe that of all the blues singers he is the one entitled to wear the crown. To get a better idea of why they think this way, he should be seen in action at a theatre like the Apollo in Harlem, preferably on a bill with other great blues artists. Usually, B.B. King closes the show, and as the others come on one by one, exerting their spells by voice, guitar or harmonica, it is hard not to wonder how he will ever top them.

This song is for Cairo, but not the same Cairo we're watching now, live and moving, on our TVs. The Henry Townsend's Cairo is somewhere in Illinois, US. But from my own experience, blues is always the best form of addressing what is happening "now".

Blues & Rhythm Classics Discography

Blues & Rhythm Classics (also known as "Rhythm and Blues Classics") is a series of French Classics Records label devoted to rhythm and blues of the 1940s and 1950s. It contains 190 releases (5000-5189) that began in 2001.

For many years I was wondering why there is no information in regard to the Classics label which played a major role in introducing a generation to classic jazz, and in this case R&B. "I guess he was a bit of a technophobe," wrote Dave Penny, the author of liner notes for the Blues & Rhythm Classics, about the founder and boss of the Classics, Gilles Petard. This may explain many things as far as obscurity of the label is concerned, but still, the comment Dave left at the end of this post shed light on more issues, especially how the job was done:

[The] process was all very mundane; I first began writing for Gilles when he was putting out LPs on French Pathé and his own Official and Sing labels in the 1980s. Around 2001 I got a letter from him [Gilles Petard] (I guess he was a bit of a technophobe), telling me that he was launching an R&B series of his Chronological Classics set, to run parallel to the jazz series that had already been going for over 10 years by that time.

I probably wasn't his first choice of writer, but I was the first one who agreed take on that huge task for the tiny amount of money he wanted to pay (he was always pretty mean when it came to paying fees, but I was more interested in researching and writing about the artists than about how much I was being paid).

From 2001 until 2008 he sent me the track-listings for, first two compilations a month and, then, increased this to three a month once the series became established. There was never any compiling, as such, because it was simply all the artist's tracks in chronological order, and all I got was his typed sheets through the post every month (i.e. no cassettes or CD-Rs of the tracks listed). He had a great record collection, himself, and a fantastic network of heavy-duty blues and R&B collectors to call upon, so that there were very few recordings he wasn't able to track down during those seven years.

It all came to a sudden end in 2008 when two of his distributors in France collapsed owing his company lots of money. The CDs weren't selling very well any more (too many people were downloading them free from blogs and torrent sites), so he decided to call it a day. He told me he was thinking of carrying the series on as downloads only on iTunes, and I did a couple more notes for him on this understanding, but as far as I'm aware they were never released.

While I was relieved that I didn't have the huge pressure of writing three essays a month anymore, I was sad that we hadn't covered every artist we should have...or completed the recording careers of those we had started. I am proud of what we did achieve, though; after all, who else would have bothered releasing CDs of Jo Jo Adams, Tom Archia, Buster Bennett and Rusty Bryant - to name just the As and Bs!

امروز یک آلبوم بلوز از هاولین وولف که هزاران کیلومتر دور از خانه‌اش، شیکاگو، و در دوره رنسانس موسیقی بلوز در لندن ضبط شده است را خواهید شنید. نکته مهم این آلبوم حضور اریک کلاپتون (گیتار)، چارلی واتس (درامر رولینگ استونز)، رینگو استار (درامر بیتلز، فقط در آهنگ دوم)، بیل وایمن (نوازنده باس استونز) و استیو وین‌وود (نوزانده همه فن حریف ترافیک) به‌عنوان موزیسن‌های همراهی کننده وولف است که از دوره تین‌ایجری او را به‌عنوان یکی از بت‌هایشان می‌پرستیدند. شنیدن موسیقی وولف، درست مثل شنیدن صدای گرگ در زمان قرص کامل ماه، همیشه تجربه‌ای استثنایی است. این‌بار واقعاً مرد گرگ نمای آمریکایی در لندن بیداد می‌کند.

در كودكي‌ام در نيويورك به نظر مي‌آمد كه صداي موسيقي هميشه به گوش مي‌رسد. من در موسيقي‌اي كه از طرف خيابان مي‌آمد، موسيقي راديوي ماشين‌هاي در حال گذر، رستوران‌ها، مغازه‌هاي گوشه و كنار و پنجره باز آپارتمان‌هاي كنار كوچه‌ها غرق مي‌شدم. در خانه، مادرم اغلب براي خودش مي‌خواند، به‌خصوص وقتي ظرف‌ها را مي‌شست. پدرم ماندولين مي‌زد و برادرم فرانك، گيتار.

اولين موسيقي‌اي كه به گوشم خورد احتمالاً صفحه‌اي از جنگو راينهارد بود. آن زمان در راديو همه چيز وجود داشت؛ از موسيقي محلي ايتاليايي تا آهنگ‌هاي كانتري و وسترن. دايي‌ام جو يك مجموعه بزرگ موسيقي داشت و فكر مي‌كنم از اولين كساني بود كه مرا به حرف زدن واداشت، شايد به خاطر عشق مشترك‌مان به موسيقي. حدود سال 1958 بود كه آن اتفاق جادويي افتاد و صداي كسي را شنيدم كه شبيه به صداي هيچ آدم ديگري تا آن زمان نبود. اسم خواننده لد بِلي بود و براي دنياي عجيبي را به‌رويم باز كرد. باور كنيد اگر مي‌توانستم مثل او گيتار بزنم هيچ‌وقت فيلم‌ساز نمي‌شد.

تقريباً در همان زمان با دوستانم به تماشاي كنسرت يكي ديگر از بت‌هاي‌مان، بو ديدلي، رفتيم. كنسرت او جايي در بروكلين بود و در حين برنامه و كنار حركت‌هاي بي‌نظيرش ضرب‌هايي از آفريقا را با راك اندرول هميشگي‌ تلفيق مي‌كرد كه حسي از اصالت تاريخي به ما مي‌داد و عطش ما را براي شناختن اين موسيقي بيش‌تر مي‌كرد. آغاز دهه 1960 با هجوم گروه‌هاي انگليسي پس از بيتلز همراه بود. من هم مثل همه با اين سيل حركت كردم. هرچه بيش‌تر در تاريخ راك تحقيق كردم، ديدم همه چيز به بلوز برمي‌گردد. گروه‌هاي انگليسي آن موقع مدام قطعه‌هاي مشهور اساتيد بلوز را به عنوان اداي دين اجرا مي‌كردند؛ درست همان طور كه موج نويي‌ها به اساتيد سينماي آمريكا ارادت داشتند. با اين دريافت جديد از موسيقي به جان مايال، اولين تركيب گروه فليت وودمك و رولينگ استونز علاقه‌مند شدم و البته گروه Cream كه هنوز هم آلبوم‌هايشان را دوست دارم و مي‌خواهم خودم را با موسيقي آن‌ها در يك اتاق زنداني كنم. در پايان دهه 1960 اشتياق براي شناخت ريشه‌ها و مردان اصلي بلوز كه گروه‌هاي آن موقع صرفاً آوازهاي‌شان را بازخواني مي‌كردند شدت گرفت. در زمان تدوين ووداستاك بود كه مايك وادلي، كارگردان فيلم، صفحه‌اي از سان هاوس آورد كه تا آن موقع اسمش را نشنيده بودم. وقتي آن را گوش كردم قلبم مي‌خواست بايستد. او صاحب صدا و سبكي بود كه از زمان‌هاي خيلي خيلي دور و مكان‌هايي دورتر برمي‌خواست. يك سال بعد سروكله رابرت جانسن در زندگي‌ام پيدا شد كه او هم يكي ديگر از آن صداهاي كهني بود كه روح را به لرزه درمي‌آورد.

عشق من به موسيقي بود كه وادارم كرد آخرين والس را بسازم. مي‌خواستم چيزي فراتر از ثبت آخرين كنسرت گروه The Band باشد. مي‌خواستم ثبت تاريخچه موسيقي يك گروه و هر آدم بزرگ ديگري كه در آن كنسرت حاضر شد، باشد. اما وقتي مادي واترز روي صحنه آمد كنترل موسيقي، تاريخ و هرچه را كه به آن فكر مي‌كردم در دست گرفت. اجراي او بي‌مثال بود و همه را شوكه كرد. هميشه بابت حضور در آن‌جا، فيلم گرفتن از آن و تقسيم اين لذت با ميليون‌ها تماشاگر ديگر پس از نمايش فيلم، احساس غرور كرده‌ام

در ده سال گذشته دو مستند درباره سينما، سينماي آمريكا و ايتاليا، ساخته‌ام و در آن‌ها سعي كرده‌ام ديدگاهي شخصي را جايگزين تاريخ‌نگاري معمول بكنم. براي مشاركت در ساخت مجموعه بلوز هم تصميمي مشابه گرفتم. پروژه از وقتي شروع شد كه با مارگريت بووي ــ تهيه‌كننده‌اي از كمپاني كاپا ــ مستندي همراه با اريك كلاپتون كار مي‌كرديم به نام هيچ چيز مگر بلوز. كار ما اين بود كه تصاويري آرشيوي از اجراهاي كلاپتن از قطعه‌هاي مشهور بلوز را كنار اجراهاي اصلي آن‌ها بگذاريم. در حين كار خود ما از قدرت و شاعرانگي اين هم‌جواري شگفت‌زده شديم و براي‌مان نمونه‌اي عالي بود از بي‌زماني موسيقي. در عين حال راه‌حلي سينمايي براي دست يافتن به تاريخ بلوز پيدا كرده بوديم. سريعاً با كارگردان‌هايي كه از ارتباط قلبي تنگاتنگ آن‌ها با موسيقي خبر داشتم، تماس گرفتم و قرار شد هر كدام‌شان از ديدگاه شخصي منحصربه‌فردي به تاريخ موسيقي بلوز نگاه كند. ايده اصلي فيلم خودم، كه اولين فيلم مجموعه بود، سفر از ميسي‌سي‌پي به آفريقا به همراه يك موزيسين جوان بلوز به نام كوري هريس بود. دوربين به سراغ آخرين بازماندگان بلوز در مي‌سي‌سي‌پي مي‌رود و بعضي مكان‌هاي كليدي اين موسيقي را ثبت مي‌كند.

جان لي هوكر، بسي اسميت، مادي واترز، هاولين وولف و بلايند ليمون جفرسن و خيلي نام‌هاي ديگر بزرگ‌ترين هنرمنداني‌اند كه آمريكا تا امروز داشته است. وقتي به موسيقي آن‌ها گوش مي‌كنيد قلب‌تان مي‌لرزد و انرژي شگفت‌انگيز آن‌ها منبع الهامي بزرگ مي‌شود كه ذات حقيقي راك نيز هست. وقتي مستقيماً به قلب انساني وارد شويد، يا بهتر است بگويم به وضعيت انساني، آن لحظه يك لحظه بلوز است.
