"I've talked to a lot of people who came into jazz with the 52nd Street thing, and for them it has always been very democratic and the kind of music and social setting that really brought to the consciousness of a lot of people the contributions of the people who were from different backgrounds. Because it's kind of stupid to go to a club and see Zoot Sims playing with Sid Catlett and say that he plays okay for a white guy. That's ridiculous. It became apparent that there were guys who were just tremendous players on whatever instrument, and it wasn't just that the stamp of approval was put on them by Dizzy Gillespie or whoever. They were there because they could play. And they could do the job perhaps better than anybody else around for that particular occasion. I mean Al Haig and Zoot and Stan Getz and a whole bunch of other guys that were—Shelly Manne was in the Coast Guard, and he would come in, and Sid [Catlett] would say, "Hey man, come on play." Well, they didn't invite a whole lot of servicemen up to play. You better believe that. And for this guy to come around and be asked to play was, you know, he could play.
