Jonathan Rosenbaum Takes the "A" Train

Jonathan Rosenbaum [image courtesy of San Sebastián Film Festival]

As a part of Jonathan Rosenbaum's 70th birthday posts on my jazz and film blogs, I asked him to compile a playlist of his favorite jazz tunes and he kindly provided me with the music that has inspired him, moved him and has stayed with him through the years. (the slideshow includes the cover of the albums used in the playlist) He shares details of his jazz life with us in the interview published on Keyframe. And if you want to catch up with some of his writings on jazz and film, or jazz in general, please visit this index that I posted yesterday.

The discographical information is given below the player. If this particular player isn't compatible with your system, there a simpler one, if you just scroll down the page, where, alternatively, you can download it and listen to it offline.

Even on his birthday, it is Jonathan who gives us presents.

  1. Thanks so much, Ehsan, for your truly wonderful and comprehensive support. Here in Mexico City, taking a short breather after a truly fabulous and rich day, I'm having a ball listening to my own favorite cuts, thanks to your links.

Two very, very small corrections: (1) My favorite version of Mingus's "Peggy's Blue Skylight" is the fast version included on CHARLES MINGUS IN PARIS: THE COMPLETE AMERICAN RECORDINGS. And the correct link to the review of JAZZ '34 is http://www.jonathanrosenbaum.com/?p=6559

All the best (and in deep gratitude),
    Jonathan

    1. Dear Jonathan, the broken link is fixed and the Paris version of "Peggy..." is included. I used the 11 minute long version of the Paris album, as there were some "false start" of the song and one faster cut from the same April recording in Paris. I hope it's a satisfactory.

  2. Thanks, Ehsan, and I'm sorry that I wasn't more explicit. The full and fast cut I had in mind is 9:47 in length, and the slower full take on that same album is 12:53. I don't have access to an 11-minute version and can't check the one you posted now, but I'm sure it's good. All the best, Jonathan (still in Mexico City)

    1. Solved. Finally, I added the 9:47 version to the playlist.
